Mario Marietta Wins Inaugural United States Speed Association Midget Championship

(Lebanon, IN) Terra Haute (IN) native Mario Marietta road six wins and a 100% finishing record to the top of the inaugural United States Speed Association Midget Championship point standings during the 2010 racing season.

Following two weeks of rain outs, Marietta opened the USSA season with a 3rd place finish on the banking at Plymouth Speedway. Over the next month, he piloted his Esslinger Ford Beast to a run of four consecutive wins at Grundy County Speedway, Anderson Speedway, Illiana Motor Speedway and again at Grundy County Speedway, giving him a lead in the USSA Midget Championship he would not relinquish. Marietta put a cap on his championship season with wins at Illiana Motor Speedway and Grundy County Speedway to close out the season.

Throughout the season, Joliet’s (IL) Jim Anderson, New Castle’s (IN) Dalton Armstrong and Rookie Taylor Ferns kept the pressure on Marietta. Armstrong won three times and Ferns notched one 1st place finish. The only miscue of the season occurred at Anderson Speedway on August 20 when Marietta bounced his car off the turn three wall during the heat race. Pam, Norm and Travis Young allowed him to step into their Esslinger Ford Beast for the feature event to help him in his points chase.

“Winning the USSA Midget Championship was a great success for my team and me,” commented USSA Midget Champion Mario Marietta. “It has given me the confidence and experience I need to continue my climb up the racing ladder,” he said when asked to describe the impact his USSA Midget Championship will have on his career.

MORRIS -- The 29th annual Bob Lockard Memorial at the Grundy County Speedway started later than expected on Saturday.
There were several pileups in preliminary races leading up to the Lockard Memorial.
Then when the Lockard got the go-ahead to take off, there were two wrecks during the opening laps of the 30-lap Memorial feature.
When all the racing had concluded, however, Mario Marietta from Clinton, Ind., was the winner of the checkered flag.
It was the first time that Marietta had ever run in the Lockard Memorial.
The 13-year racing veteran has been running in the UMARA for the last three years.
Marietta, who gained the lead on the final lap, is the current point leader.
"This was a special night," Marietta said moments after grabbing checkered flag. "I love this track and enjoy running my cars here."
Marietta has been around the sport for a long time.
And, he would have it no other way.
"I have been around the sport all my life," he said. "My father was an auto driver and loved this as much as I do.
"I'm happy to win this race. Bob Lockard was a special person and beloved by many."
The Bob Lockard Memorial, first run in 1981 at Joliet Memorial Stadium, is in memory to a man who loved auto racing.
He spent countless hours trying to help numerous auto drivers along the way.
Lockard was well known for driving his No. 69 midget cars to much success during a brilliant racing career.

Mario Marietta thrilled fans at Grundy County Speedway. Mario went quickly from the inside third row starting position to 3rd while passing for 2nd was spun and restarted at the tale. Mario went through the field as he took 2nd position he was the white flag. Going into turn 3 Mario dove to the bottom and passed coming off turn 4 to claim win #7 of the season!

Wild night for Mario he set a new track record qualifying at the Anderson Speedway. When the heat race started Mario surged to the 2nd place spot behind Jim Anderson. Mario moved to the 2nd groove to try a outside run and made contact resulting in a tore up car in the turn four wall. Being points leader Mario asked friend Travis Young to run his #11 car. Mario started last in the #11 car and ended up 3rd.

Mario Marietta had a very wild night at the Grundy County Speedway. He set Quick time started 10th in the feature and was quickly passing for the lead when the leader spun Marietta coming off of turn 2. Marietta restarted at the tail and quickly jumped back up to the runner up spot narrowley missing the win.

(Lebanon, IN) The United States Speed Association returns to Anderson (IN) Speedway for a full night of open wheel action on Saturday July 24th. Each of USSA Divisions, Midgets, Kenyon Cars and Thunder Roadsters, will line up for 50 lap feature events on the legendary high banks of Anderson Speedway.

USSA Midget Points leader Mario Marietta electrified the fans when USSA last visited Anderson Speedway on July 9th by starting 8th, spinning twice and still winning the USSA Midget Feature. Kenyon Midget grads Grant Galloway and Travis Young will be returning to their racing roots when they strap on Kenyon Midgets to race the 50 lap Kenyon Midget Feature.

USSA is targeting the race fan experience throughout the 2010 racing season and the Anderson event is no exception. Fans will be able to meet midget champions Kyle Hamilton, Travis Young, Jim Anderson as well as current USSA point leaders Mario Marietta

Mario Marietta Racks-up USSA Midget Wins 3 and 4 at Illiana Motor Speedway and Grundy County Speedway July 14 and July 17

(Lebanon, IN) Mario Marietta put an exclamation point on the United States Speed Association’s mid-season duel with UMARA by winning both the 30 lap feature at Illiana Motor Speedway on July 14 and the 25 lapper at Grundy County on July 17. Both nights Marietta had to come from starting positions deep in the field and battle with different protagonists to accomplish his sweep of the week.

Wednesday’s show at Illiana began with Marietta and Kyle Hamilton starting on the fourth row and the two drivers worked through traffic as a pair. Once Marietta passed early leader Jim Anderson on lap 7 and Hamilton followed him through on lap 9, they set off in a classic midget racing battle, nose to tail all the way to the 4th turn on the final lap. Hamilton stuck his nose under Marietta in his bid for the win and hooked his left front on the dirt and after trying to save his car spun out coming to rest just short of the start finish line.

Mario Marietta Lights Up the Anderson Speedway High Banks at the
University of Northwestern Ohio 150

(Anderson, IN) Grabbing the checkered flag doesn’t get any tougher than the task Mario Marietta set for himself during the United States Speed Association 50 lap Feature for Midgets during the University of Northwestern Ohio 150 at Anderson (IN) Speedway on July 9th. After setting fast time, Marietta started the feature from 8th, spun twice, went to the tail of the field and finally passed early race leader Nick Wagner to take the point on lap 41.

Wagner jumped into the lead in turn one of the first lap and was stalked by Jolliet IL native Jim Anderson throughout much of the first 40 laps. Dalton Armstrong’s job was nearly as tough as Marietta’s as he jumped to second place on lap 49 after starting deep in the field.

Marne, MI…….Mario Marietta of Indianapolis, Ind. passed Daniel Bedford on the 20th lap and led the final six laps to win Saturday night’s 25-lap USAC Regional Midget finale at the Berlin Raceway, co-sanctioned by WOMS. Trailing Marietta’s First Financial Bank/White Construction Beast/Mopar at the checkered flag were Bedford, who led the first 19 laps, Alfred Galedrige Jr., Jim Anderson and Bradley Galedrige. Series champion Kyle Hamilton did not participate.

INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time since 1969, headlines can shout, MARIO WINS INDY!

That would be 23-year-old Mario Marietta, not Andretti, and the scene was the 1/5-mile Indianapolis Speedrome, not the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. But the Clinton, Ind., native’s grin couldn’t have been wider if he had won at the Brickyard itself.

In a dominating performance worthy of his name, Marietta surged into the lead at the drop of the green and easily held off Billy Wease and 16-year-old Kyle Hamilton in Sunday’s 50-lap Rumble Series/Wolverine feature that marked the return of midget racing to the historic Speedrome.

“I’ve been here so many times in a midget and been leading …” Marietta said, not bothering to finish the frustrating thought. “Tonight, to finally get the job finished, it feels awfully good.”

Marietta’s father, David, who joined him in victory lane, confirmed that the youngster was named for Andretti, who scored his lone Indianapolis 500 victory 40 years ago this month.

“Mario Andretti was one of my heroes,” the elder Marietta said. “When he was born, his right foot was movin’ when he came out. He was just kind of tapping, like you would an accelerator. He’s been racing since he was 8 years old.”

In a race brimming with cautions, Marietta’s only miscue came on the cool-down lap, when he got into turn one too hard and abruptly spun.

“I was a little too excited,” he said sheepishly.

By then, the field was vanquished.

“He was a little faster,” admitted Wease, who finished 2½ lengths behind and barely edged the charging Hamilton. “Our car was a little off tonight. … I couldn’t get in (to the corners) the way I wanted to.”

“I think I was a little faster than Billy,” Hamilton said, “but I don’t know about the leader. He was fast.”

Marietta’s victory was his sixth overall in midgets, including three Kenyon Car wins. Sunday, he even beat A.J. That would be rookie A.J. Lesiecki, who was credited with 22nd place when he was unable to start the feature.

Defending UMARA champion Jim Anderson finished fourth, followed by USAC regulars Brian Olson and Joe Liguori. Kart veteran Mike Larrison was seventh in his first midget race. Chris Lamb, Matt Westfall and rookie Jared Marks completed the top 10.

The race was the first of four “Sunday Afternoon Stimulus” events at the Speedrome promoted by Tony Barhorst of the Rumble Series. The midgets return on May 31, then will combine with the Hoosier Outlaw winged sprints for a doubleheader on July 19. The Hoosier Outlaw sprints and UMRA TQ midgets headline the Aug. 30 finale.
Scott Tomasik won the accompanying 20-lap modified feature. Trevor Fox, Nick Bowers, Dillon Applegate and Chuck Rader notched kart victories. Mike Gass won twice in quarter midgets, while single wins went to Rachel Marks and Jonathan Lesiecki.

Whiteland Raceway

This weekend I had no USAC races so I made my way to Whiteland Raceway to race my 2009 Top Kart in Yamaha Can Lite class. I was fast time in Qualifying and Finished 2nd in my heat race. I lead the whole feature and managed to rub a hole in my fuel line and dropped out with just a few laps left. I was going to cruise home with a good lead to a easy victory...just some BAD LUCK!

I have been very excited about my 2009 USAC program...We were suppose to have a practice at Columbus on Friday and race there Saturday but rain would put a stop to the practice...I needed the practice session to try to get the car dialed in. We were fighting a loose off and forward grip problem. This resulted in a 20th starting spot in the A-Main and would end up finishing 17th as a result of a no passing one groove race track.....

2009 is here.....I competed in my first race of the year in January. Richie Hearn and I did a 24Hour endurance event at West Palm Beach FL. I had a blast I did around 12 hours of driving total. We had to make a driver chang every 2 hours so.....I did manage to get some rest....We ended of 6th overall and I had a great time.....
